Information for our Department Liaisons
Each department or program on campus that employs non-native English speaking graduate students as teaching assistants has a faculty or staff member who has been appointed our department liaison.  The liaison may be a graduate secretary, graduate advisor, or any other faculty or staff member who works with the graduate students in their area.

What do department liaisons do?  Simply put, liaisons are the link between the OEPP and the graduate students needing our services.  Liaisons are responsible for:

  • Scheduling students for the Oral English Proficiency Test (OEPT);
  • Making sure students have time to rest and review the Practice Test prior to taking the OEPT;
  • Receiving students' OEPT scores and making sure this information is kept with other student records;
  • Working with the OEPP to identify students needing to be enrolled in ENGL 620 "Classroom Communication for International Teaching Assistants";
  • Reminding students to enroll in ENGL 620 as necessary;
  • Ensuring that all international graduate students who are appointed to teaching assistant positions involving the direct instruction of undergraduate students have been certified for oral English proficiency and are in compliance with the university policy on the hiring on ITAs;
  • Completing the ITA Verification report for the OEPP each fall and spring; and
  • Assisting us in any other matters involving international graduate students in their program.

Department liaisons are the link between the OEPP and the graduate students needing our services.  Liaisons make it possible for our small staff to more efficiently handle the high volume of students who are screened for oral English proficiency and subsequently are enrolled in our courses.  We hope the information provided on these web pages will help our liaisons better understand the OEPP's services to departments.
