The Professional Development class is
for international graduate students who have already been certified
for oral English proficiency. Students must
apply for and be accepted in to
the class. Students may apply at
any time. Because the OEPP must first meet the demand for ENGL
620 by students who have not yet been certified, the Professional
Development section is not offered on a regular basis. Students
who have submitted an application will be notified via e-mail when
the next class is scheduled.
This course offers 5 equivalent
credits* to represent the amount of time and work necessary in the
class. It takes time to
improve oral English skills, so students need to be aware that class attendance and
participation is very important and necessary. Students should not
apply to this course unless they are willing to make this commitment.
Enrollment in the course is limited to 8 students and demand for the
course is great. It is important that students apply only if
they are willing to make the commitment to regularly attend class and
to remain
in the class for the entire semester.
*Equivalent credit represents the
amount of work required by the course. However, equivalent
credit is not factored in to a student's GPA and the credit does not
count towards a plan of study.
The course will have six main
components:
I. Goal Setting/Community Involvement
- Focus is on individuals' motivation to increase English proficiency
and identify community resources available to support students' goals.
II. Explication & Presentation Skills
- Instruction, demonstration, practice (with short presentation
opportunities), and evaluation of: defining terms and explaining
processes or concepts in settings of varying formalities.
III. Interaction in Group Settings -
Instruction, demonstration, practice (with case studies of real
problems), and evaluation of interaction in group meetings, including
individual style and general social rules of conduct.
IV. Preparation for Recruitment -
Instruction, demonstration, practice (with a mock interviewer), and
evaluation in preparation for the academic job recruitment process.
V. Coordination of Academic Writing
with Oral Proficiency Transcription - Assessment of oral and technical
writing skills including grammar, sentence structure and overall
cohesion, and overview of strategies for writing in a systematic
manner.
VI. One-on-One Interaction - Accent
reduction instruction and/or discourse practice with the course
instructor and/or another outside participant, individually for 30
minutes per week.
Students will receive a grade of "S"
or "U". This course is not repeatable.
