How to Register for
ENGL 62000, "Classroom
Communication for International Graduate Students"
|
|
ENGL 620 is open only to those international
graduate students whose department's have identified as potential
teaching assistants. Students must have taken the Oral English
Proficiency Test and received a
score of 45 or below to be eligible for
ENGL 620.
|
INSTRUCTIONS
- First, departments must identify
the students in their area who have taken the OEPT and have the
greatest need to be enrolled in ENGL 620. ENGL 620 fills
quickly and it's possible not every student desiring the course will
be able to enroll. Students who are expected to be needed to
teach within the next year should be given priority, especially for
the fall semester. Students with other sources of funding or
who are not immediately needed to teach should wait until spring or
summer to take the class. Keep in mind that some students may
need more than one semester to be certified by the class.
- Once priority students for the
class have been identified by the department, the registration
advisor should work with these students to select 2 or 3 sections of
ENGL 620 that are appropriate for their OEPT score level and will
work with their schedule. Because class size is small,
sections fill quickly and students may not always get their first
choice of class times.
- The student's department liaison
to the OEPP should then notify the OEPP Program Coordinator of their
students who need to be registered for the course, and their top
choices of class times.
- Within one or two days the OEPP
will either enter an override for one of the student's choices, or
suggest alternative class times. After the override code has
been entered the student must register for the course through
MyPurdue. The OEPP does not register students.
If a student has not been pre-approved for
the course (or the override has not yet been entered), when he or she attempts to register there will be an
error message saying the department must be contacted for approval.
Please note that approvals for ENGL 620 are made by the OEPP, not the English department.
You must contact the OEPP at
oepp@purdue.edu for assistance with course registration and
approvals. In no case should the student's department enter
the override codes for registration.
Professional Development Section
Students who have been certified
may be interested in the Professional
Development Section of ENGL 620. This section allows
students to continue improving their spoken English proficiency and
focuses on skills important to students nearing graduation and
planning to enter the job market. Students interested in the
professional development section need to submit an application by
the posted deadline. The class is usually offered in the spring
semester and is limited to eight students. Students accepted
for the course will receive specific registration instructions via
e-mail. It is expected that this class will next be offered in
the Spring 2012 semester.
