The SPAN PLAN Adult Student Services Program offers free individual tutoring to adult nontraditional students attending Purdue-West Lafayette and Statewide Technology-Lafayette campuses.                                                                                                                             
Students are encouraged to apply for tutoring services early in the semester to secure tutoring rather than waiting until the first exam.
Span Plan tutoring eligibility criteria:

  1. Be an adult undergraduate student meeting at least one of the following three criteria:
    1. A student who experienced a minimum three year break between completing high school and attending higher education.
    2. A student who experienced an interruption of two or more years while pursuing higher education.
    3. A student who is married and/or a parent.
  2. Enrolled in course work at Purdue West Lafayette or Statewide Tech Lafayette campus.

SIX easy steps for adult nontraditional students to receive FREE Span Plan sponsored tutoring:

  1. Complete an Application for Tutoring Services.*
  2. Attend an individual meeting with the program supervisor for an overview of the policies and procedures of the tutoring program.
  3. Watch your email for a referral from the program supervisor.
  4. Contact your Span Plan tutor via phone or email to initiate tutoring.
  5. Attend the tutoring sessions prepared with questions.
  6. Continue to schedule follow up tutoring as needed.**

** Students must submit a new application and meet with the program supervisor every semester to update their file.

Students may receive up to 60 hours of free tutoring each semester.
Students are encouraged to investigate other areas on campus that offer Academic Assistance. In some cases students will be referred to other tutoring programs or student services departments on campus. See the list of other resources for Academic Assistance by clicking on the link.

Span Plan Adult Student Services cannot guarantee that a tutor is available for all courses. College of Technology students are encouraged to contact their academic advisor for assistance in technology courses.

Applications will be accepted through the 8th week of classes each fall and spring semester. The deadlines for summer school modules are the half way point of the respective summer module.

Tutor Qualifications
To qualify as a Span Plan tutor, students must:

  1. Complete the tutor application. As you complete your application, please be sure that all the information is legible and all course numbers are listed.
  2. Have earned a grade of B or better in the course(s) you will tutor.
  3. Meet with the tutoring program’s supervisor, Dorothy Hughes. Call 494-1257 to schedule an appointment.
  4. Complete business office payroll forms and meet with the Dean of Students Business Office clerk.
  5. Complete all tutoring documentation.
