Hate and Violence

SOC 356X

THUR - 6:00 - 8:50 PM

A year never goes by that we don't hear about at least one school shooting. A gunman trying to convince others to follow an anti-Semitic path opens fire on a Jewish community center.  An innocent black man is dragged to his death behind a pickup truck.  Two teenagers, planning mass destruction, begin by murdering their own despised classmates.  Two men beat a gay man to a pulp and tie him to a fence leaving him for dead in an isolated area.  Have you wondered why our society seems like it is getting more violent and out of control?

This course examines the causes of and solutions to hatred and violence. Definitions of a range of concepts such as anti-Semitism, discrimination, hate crimes, prejudice, scapegoating, bigotry, racism, homosexual prejudice, and other topics will be addressed.  Various methods will be used in order to safely and respectfully address sensitive issues, to include experiential activities, videos, guest speakers and classroom discussion.  This course is intended to give students a sense of hope that there are solutions to the many problems our society faces.
