Scavenger Hunts
If properly conducted, scavenger hunts can have value and be an educational experience. Student organization officers should follow these recommendations to ensure that scavenger hunt activities are safe and useful for students who participate in them.

  • Should be written in advance and registered on an Event Planning Form.
  • Conduct hunts during reasonable hours of the day (NOT between midnight and 7:30 a.m.)
  • Should NOT have a time limit to determine a "winner."
  • Should augment participants' learning about their organization, field of study, or the University.
  • Encourage participants to work as a team (should not hunt alone!)
  • DO NOT PERMIT PARTICIPANTS TO STEAL PROPERTY, OR TO TRESPASS.
  • Hunts should not disrupt regular University business, or the peace of community residents.

**SAO staff are available to help any student organization prepare educationally-sound scavenger hunts. Come to Schleman Hall, Room 250 for assistance.**

Showcasing movies
It is unlawful for student organizations to show films to its members. Student organizations must obtain a public performance license. It is relatively easy and usually requires no more than a phone call. Fees are determined by such factors as the number of times a particular movie will be shown, how large the audience will be, etc. While fees vary, they are generally inexpensive for smaller performances. The major firms that handle these licenses include:

Traveling with Your Student Organization
Student organizations traveling outside of Tippecanoe County must complete a Travel Planning Form (TPF). Information needed to complete the TPF includes a list of participants, officers and advisor signatures, names of drivers, phone number and address of destination, and estimated costs for the trip. At least two weeks of advance planning is suggested.

Vehicles:

  • Private Vehicles. The owner’s insurance is the primary coverage, and each driver and owner should carry at least $100,000 in liability coverage.
  • University Vehicles. These may be used for educational activities that pertain to the organization’s purpose. Go to Transportation (corner of Intramural Dr. and Harrison St.) to check on availability and pick up request forms.
  • Other Transportation. If a rental company is being used, purchasing additional insurance is strongly encouraged.

Click here for additional information if your organization is traveling abroad (outside the United States).

Use of Purdue Logo/Merchandising
Selling merchandise that bears a Purdue trademark needs to be purchased through a Purdue licensed vendor. Information about licensed vendors and logo use is available online.

If the merchandise is not being manufactured by a licensed vendor, prior approval from David Wilson, Logo Licensing Manager, is required. Mr. Wilson's phone number is 494-1077.

Vendor solicitation
Outside vendors are allowed to sell their product on campus as long as they are sponsored by a student organization. Sponsorship includes:

  • An approved Event Planning Form is on file in the Student Activities and Organizations Office, Schleman Hall, Room 250.
  • A representative of the sponsoring student organization must be present at each selling booth at all times.
  • The vendor must not solicit any customers. Representatives of the sponsoring student organization must conduct all soliciting.
  • Outside vendors may not be present during any solicitation in the Union or Stewart Center.
