Purdue recognizes 5 students who are mentors for students, others
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University is recognizing students who are using their experiences to be examples for others.
Purdue Marketing and Media has developed a website at http://www.purdue.edu/fivestudents/index.html that includes information on the students as inspirations to others.
The five "Example Makers" include:
* Mel Chua of Glenview, Ill., a graduate student studying engineer education. In addition to her studies, Chua provides teachers and faculty members across the country with a way to provide their students with real-life, hands-on learning experiences through workshops on the Internet.
* Amanda Emery of Springport, Ind., a senior in animal sciences. Emery mentors other students while she volunteers as a small group leader for Introduction to Animal Sciences and as a founding member of the Animal Science mentor program.
* LeRoy E. Gordon III of West Lafayette, Ind., a senior studying history. Gordon serves as a mentor with Purdue Student Education Council's Military Children Tutoring Project and as a summer camp counselor.
* Erika Healy of Hammond, Ind., a sophomore in mechanical engineering. She volunteers at the YWCA and is a member of Minority Technology Association and Women in Technology. With those organizations, Healy strives to inspire high school minority groups and women to consider entering the field of technology.
* Zach Umperovitch of West Lafayette, Ind., a graduate student studying geology and geophysics. Umperovitch shares his passions with others through his roles as president of the Purdue Society of Professional Engineers Rube Goldberg Team and founder of the Purdue University Geological Society.
