Purdue Research Park-based firm adds breast cancer medical device experts to team

August 6, 2010

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Officials at Nano-Rad LLC, a firm whose technology improves the standard of care for breast cancer radiation therapy, have added a research and development consultant and an outsourced chief financial officer to the company roster.

Nano-Rad president and CEO Richard F. Mussmann announced that Rance A. Winkler will serve as the company's research and development consultant, and Jim Schulz will be the chief financial officer. Nano-Rad is an affiliate of the Purdue Research Park.

"Rance brings a wealth of knowledge to Nano-Rad," Mussmann said. "He co-founded the first company to develop and introduce a one-week, partial breast irradiation system, the MammoSite, which won a Gold MD&DI Medical Device Design Award."

Winkler will work to accelerate the research and development of Nano-Rad's technology.

"I believe Nano-Rad can enhance the efficiency, improve the safety and introduce fewer cosmetic side effects in cancer treatment therapies because of the company's capacity to deliver low-dose radiation while avoiding healthy adjacent tissue," Winkler said. "Based on my experience, the Nano-Rad technology has the capability to advance breast cancer treatment to the next level, and I joined the team to be part of this cutting-edge effort."

As chief financial officer for Nano-Rad, Schulz brings direct CFO experience in working with new medical device startups. He also previously worked for Suros Surgical, the Indianapolis startup that created a breakthrough automated breast cancer biopsy device.

"With Rance and Jim's leadership experience, I am confident that we will accelerate the commercialization of Nano-Rad's breakthrough technology," Mussmann said.

About Nano-Rad LLC

Nano-Rad, a Purdue Research Park affiliate, has developed the world's smallest implantable radiation device for treating cancer. It enables doctors to precisely place safer, low-dose rate radiation devices directly at the tumor bed with a single, needle implant procedure in an outpatient setting. Adverse cosmetic effects may be reduced or eliminated. Clinic time and overhead costs are greatly reduced. Unique to Nano-Rad's product, all traces of the radioactive material and its bioabsorbable carrier are naturally cleared from the patient.
