Sean Rotar elevated to ASLA Council of Fellows

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Sean Rotar, program chair and associate professor of landscape architecture, was one of 35 American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) members selected for the 2021 Class of Fellows. ASLA Council of Fellows are elected for their exceptional contributions to the landscape architecture profession and society-at-large. Election is among the highest honors the ASLA bestows on members.

“Sean is a huge asset to our students and our department,” said Linda Prokopy, department head and professor of horticulture and landscape architecture. “This recognition from the ASLA highlights what we already knew: Sean is among the best of the best landscape architects. His knowledge and skills have helped establish the careers of hundreds of our former students. His active mentoring and thoughtful leadership of our landscape architecture program is second to none and we are lucky to have him here at Purdue.”

Rotar was selected for the Council of Fellows in the service category. He has served the ASLA at the chapter level in Indiana and Illinois. He spent nine years serving on four national ASLA committees, including three years as chair of two committees. Rotar is a trustee for Frank Lloyd Wright’s Samara and has been involved in historic landscape preservation for Indiana Landmarks.

Rotar’s service to the local community includes scouts leadership, teaching landscape architecture workshops and additional efforts to introduce children to nature and landscape architecture as a profession.

“The goal of landscape architecture is to help people live better lives,” Rotar said. “We are physically improving the places people live, work and play so they can live happier, healthier and more fulfilling lives.”

Founded in 1899, the American Society of Landscape Architects had named 1,270 fellows before the class of 2021. Rotar and two other Hoosiers were invested during the 2021 Conference on Landscape Architecture on Sunday (Nov. 21).
