Purdue seminar to develop agribusiness managers’ financial acumen

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University’s Center for Food and Agricultural Business will host the 2018 Agribusiness Finance for Non-Financial Managers seminar, June 24-27 on the university’s West Lafayette campus.

The seminar will deepen participants’ understanding of financial management responsibilities and how daily decisions impact their companies’ profitability. Through faculty-led presentations, participants will develop skills needed to better communicate with financial managers, discover how to make more informed decisions by using financial statements and discuss the current financial market and its impact on agribusiness.

“Agribusiness Finance for Non-Financial Managers aims to help managers strategically use accounting statements to better understand their roles in the company bottom line,” said Michael Gunderson, center director and professor of agricultural economics. “The seminar focuses on building understanding of how the CFO thinks to improve manager/CFO interactions and influence the success of the firm.”

In addition to Gunderson, program presenters are Michael Boehlje, professor emeritus of agricultural economics, and Jaclyn Kropp, associate professor in the Food and Resource Economics Department at the University of Florida.

Program topics include thinking like a CFO, interpreting financial statements, financial evaluation, profitability analysis and financial management.

Participants will define key financial terminology, learn how to interpret balance sheets, discuss how to conduct a financial health assessment, use simple profitability ratios and analytical procedures to determine financial standing, and apply financial tools to relevant agribusiness industry situations using a case study.

This program is designed for mid- to upper-level non-financial managers who want to develop their understanding of business from a financial standpoint.

The program early bird rate is $2,395 through May 25. The regular program rate is $2,595. Learn more and register at http://agribusiness.purdue.edu/seminars-and-events/agfinance
