U.S. DOE official to speak at Nuclear Engineering seminar series

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The current state of nuclear plants will be among the topics discussed by a U.S. Department of Energy official during the School of Nuclear Engineering’s weekly seminar series.

Suzanne Jaworowski, senior advisor in the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Nuclear Energy, serves as the Political Liaison between the Office of Nuclear Energy and the Secretary of Energy, as well as the White House.

For the seminar, Jaworowski will discuss various topics on nuclear energy, including the what nuclear technology means to our country – now and in the future, the current mission for the U.S. Department of Energy regarding nuclear energy and the Office of Nuclear Energy’s proactive approach.

The seminar is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Wednesday (Jan. 17) in Room 112 of the Physics Building, 525 Northwestern Ave. Opportunities for open discussion during the seminar will be available with questions from the audience.

Jaworowski provides political and strategic leadership to the office and manages outreach and educational efforts in the area of civil nuclear energy. 

Seungjin Kim, the Capt. James F. McCarthy, Jr. and Cheryl E. McCarthy Head of Nuclear Engineering, said Jaworowski is a strong advocate for educating the public on the importance of nuclear energy.

“As one of the nation’s leading nuclear engineering programs, Purdue Nuclear Engineering is in a great position to assist the DOE’s mission toward nuclear energy by providing technical expertise and a technically-skilled workforce to government, industry and research laboratories,” he said.

Kim said nuclear energy can make a broad impact in lives through power, medical, industrial and many other scientific applications.
