Dicamba webinar includes mandatory training, weed update

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Those seeking to fulfill Indiana’s new mandatory training requirements for the application of dicamba herbicide products on DT soybeans can attend a free webinar hosted by Purdue Extension and the Purdue Pesticide Programs.

The webinar, which includes a weed update from Purdue Extension weed specialist Bill Johnson, will be presented March 23, 1-3:30 p.m. Participants can view the webinar at Purdue Extension offices and other sites throughout the state.

Three dicamba products are approved for post-emergent use on DT soybeans in Indiana - Engenia, FeXapan and XtendiMax. These and other herbicide products containing at least 6.5 percent dicamba are now classified as restricted-use pesticides (RUPs) in the state and can only be purchased and used by certified private and commercial applicators.

Prior to applying or using any of these three dicamba products, the applicator must complete dicamba training. For private applicators (farmers) this includes the person who holds the private applicator license and any person who works under the private applicator’s supervision when applying the product. For commercial applicators, both the licensed commercial applicator and the registered technician who works under the supervision of the commercial applicator must have the training before applying the product. This training requirement applies to applications made to soybeans and to applications on any other crops listed on these product labels.

Anyone who is responsible for any part of the application process - including mixing, loading, application or cleaning application equipment - must attend the training. The training is required whether or not the applicator is certified. Workers involved in the transportation of unopened dicamba containers are not required to attend training.

“The objective of the training is to prepare the applicator for the regulatory and practical rigors of applying these three products safely and effectively so we can maintain the availability of this weed control option in the future,” said David Scott, state pesticide administrator at the Office of Indiana State Chemist.
