SW Indiana Agriculture Economic Summit set for Nov. 17

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue Extension and Dubois Strong, a public-private partnership to promote economic growth in Dubois County, will host the 2017 Southwest Indiana Agriculture Economic Summit on Nov. 17.

Local producers, agricultural businesses and financial institutions will learn more about the latest economic programs and opportunities for those involved in farming.

Opening remarks will be given by Kenneth Eck, Purdue Extension-Dubois County educator, and Ed Cole, president of Dubois Strong. Chris Hurt, Purdue Extension agricultural economist, will present the Purdue Agricultural Outlook. Jerry Steckler, owner/operator of Steckler Grassfed, a producer of high quality raw aged cheese, pastured poultry, lamb, beef and pork, will be the featured local farmer.

Other topics and presenters are:

* “Weather Weirdness and What’s Next for Rural America”: Hans Schmitz, Purdue Extension-Gibson County educator.

* “Issues Facing Farmers and Agribusinesses”: Ben Wicker, agribusiness specialist with the Nature Conservancy’s North American Agriculture program.

* “USDA 2018 Programs Update”: Jane Hardisty, Indiana state conservationist with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service.

* “Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) - Marvel or Malady?”: Peter Goldsbrough, Purdue professor of botany and plant pathology.

The summit runs from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. EST at the Vincennes University Jasper Campus Center for Technology, Innovation and Manufacturing. The center is located at 961 College Ave., Jasper.
