Indiana Horticultural Congress offers lessons for vegetable farmers

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Vegetable farmers will be able to learn new information and techniques during the 2018 Indiana Horticultural Congress Feb. 13-15, 2018, at the Marriott East, 7202 E. 21st St., in Indianapolis.

Experts from Purdue University, Michigan State University and Ohio State University will cover topics such as:

*      Phytophthora blight, a soilborne water mold that can devastate pepper, pumpkin, squash and watermelon when rainy weather provides favorable conditions.

*      Biostimulants, biopesticides and biofertilizers: What is known and what is not known about these products and their role in vegetable farming.

*      Updates on variety performance including pumpkins, sweet corn, watermelon and cantaloupe.

*      The best sprayers for controlling caterpillars in sweet corn.

*      Dealing with crop damage from herbicide drift.

*      High tunnel heating alternatives and supplemental lighting.

*      High tunnel variety updates, including those related to tomatoes, cucumbers and melons.

Additionally, concurrent sessions over the three days include topics on farm management and marketing, tree fruit production, wine-grape production, food safety, hydroponics and organic production. A trade show will provide attendees an opportunity to browse new products and information, and connect with other growers and suppliers.

Recertification credits for Indiana Private Applicators and continuing credit hours for Indiana Commercial Applicators will be available.

Also, the Indiana Vegetable Growers Association annual membership meeting will be held during the event on Feb. 14.
