Purdue Galleries presents Forest of History exhibit by artist Myung Gyun, You

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University Galleries will display an installation exhibition Aug. 18-Sept. 23 titled Forest of History by contemporary artist Myung Gyun, You. This exhibition features a site-specific art installation of imposing, abstract sculptures made with dyed newspapers from all over the world. Inspired by nature, the installation asks visitors to consider their own place in the world, encouraging thought about cultural identity, nationality, and heritage as constructs within the context of natural phenomena. Purdue Galleries’ Liz Erlewine describes the work as “large, organic masses that simultaneously feel like life and the shadow of it.”

Forest of History will be on show in Fountain Gallery, which is located at 330 Main Street, Lafayette, in the historic Perrin Building. The gallery is open noon to 7 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. All Purdue Galleries exhibitions and events are free and open to the public. The opening reception will be Aug. 18, from 5:30-7 p.m. in Fountain Gallery and will feature comments from the artist. Visitors are invited to see the artist at work in the gallery during a special preview from 7-10 p.m., Aug. 17.

You is a sculptor and painter. He was born and raised in the city of Busan, South Korea. He earned his BFA from Busan University and MFA from Tama Art University in Tokyo. He has lived in South Korea, Japan, China and the United States. Although he began his artistic career as a sculptor, You currently spends most of his time making paintings and creating large-scale installation projects. He currently lives in the United States.
