Beginning Farmer Veterans to tour Crowl Cattle

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Military veterans, active service members and their families are invited to join the Indiana Beginning Farmer program for a workshop and tour of the Crowl Cattle beef farm in Lafayette on Aug. 12 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The event begins with a morning session at the ADM Agricultural Innovation Center, where participants will learn basic herd management, fertility, and farm and freezer beef marketing. Lunch will be provided and a tour of Crowl Cattle will follow.

Crowl Cattle is a small farm operated by military veteran Cadel Crowl and his wife, Rebecca. The couple continually works to improve their herd’s genetics, management, and meat quality. The operation is part of the Indiana Grown’s Homegrown by Heroes initiative, which encourages Hoosier farmer veterans to produce locally-grown food for local markets.

The Indiana Beginning Farmer program offers several tours each year designed to help service members and veterans transition into agricultural careers.

“These tours provide not only a firsthand look at some unique farms and operations, but a chance to interact with others who have been through similar experiences,” said Cindy Chastain, farmer veteran coordinator for the Purdue University-based National AgrAbility Project.

Registration is required and the cost is $10 per person. For more information or to sign up, go to http://www.cvent.com/events/beginning-farmer-tours-and-workshops/event-summary-0f7526f0380a432788708b2f2edcf1e7.aspx.

The ADM Agricultural Innovation Center is located at 698 Ahlers Drive, West Lafayette.

The Indiana Beginning Farmer program was launched in 2015 to increase the number of farm start-ups in the state and provide direct, practical assistance to anyone who is new to farming, especially operators of small farms and military veterans. The program is funded by a grant from the National Institute of Food and Agriculture Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development program (BFRDP).
