Seminar to help agribusiness, food professionals manage talent

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Food and agricultural business professionals will gather in West Lafayette in June to improve their talent management capabilities at the Managing Talent to Win managerial education program.

Purdue’s Center for Food and Agricultural Business will host the June 5-7 program. It targets middle- and upper-level managers who have at least one direct report or who are responsible for aspects of recruiting and retaining employees for their companies.

“Companies are collections of people working to create value for customers and capture some of that value for the company,” said Allan Gray, center director, Land O’Lakes Chair for Food and Agribusiness, and program presenter. “It makes sense that the way to improve organizational performance is to improve the people who make up the organization.”

In addition to Gray, program presenters are Karen Grabow, an organizational psychologist and principal of Grabow Consulting; and Michael Gunderson, associate center director and associate professor of agricultural economics at Purdue.

They will cover all six components of the center’s Talent Management Model: strategy and talent requirements, talent acquisition, performance management, learning and development, engagement, and retention and succession planning. Participants will leave with a better understanding of how to align talent with strategy, situational leadership, performance management and execution, managing critical conversations and best practices for developing talent.

Past participants have found that implementing the program’s managerial practices in the workplace can be more effective when they have attended the program with colleagues. Both teams and individuals are invited to participate.
