Building stronger families is focus of June conference

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Indiana residents are invited to attend a conference designed to help them learn tips to strengthen their families by spending wisely, eating right and living well. The event, co-sponsored by Purdue Extension, features 20 sessions on health and wellness, family relationships, and technology. It also includes workshops on heritage skills and craftmaking.

The annual Indiana Extension Homemakers Association's Home and Family Conference is scheduled for June 5-7 at the Sheraton Hotel at Keystone Crossing in Indianapolis.

Award-winning motivational speaker, artist and author Sam Glenn is the keynote speaker. His talk, “Be Your Own Superhero,” focuses on how to use your strengths to make a positive difference.

Other session topics include medication disposal, aging well, social media, connecting with nature, financial planning and millennials. Attendees also can tour Opalescent Glass in Kokomo and the Greentown Glass Museum.

The conference will conclude with a banquet June 7 at 6:30 p.m.

The Indiana Extension Homemakers Association was founded in 1913 by a group of homemakers and Purdue professors with the goal of providing social and educational opportunities for homemakers and encouraging the teaching of home economics in schools. In its first year, the group contributed to the passing of the Smith-Lever Act, which created the Cooperative Extension Service to provide instruction in agriculture and home economics.

Registration for the full three-day conference costs $175. Single-day registration costs $95. There are additional fees for heritage skills and tours. Free parking is available in the garage adjacent to the Sheraton. For more information or to register online, visit the conference website at http://bit.ly/2oLoNvw.
