Purdue Extension fruit pruning workshop set for March 1

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Fruit growers and backyard gardeners can learn fruit-pruning techniques while gaining hands-on experience in a fruit-pruning workshop hosted by Purdue Extension.

The workshop will be held March 1 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Meigs Horticulture Research Farm, 9101 S. 100 E, Lafayette. In case of inclement weather, the workshop will be rescheduled for March 22, 1-4 p.m.

Purdue horticulture specialists will demonstrate how to prune grapes, apples, peaches and berries. Discussion will focus on grape pruning strategies to balance fruit yield and vine vigor.

“Balance between fruit production and vegetative vigor is key to sustainable production of high quality grapes,” said Bruce Bordelon, professor of horticulture and a workshop organizer.

Peter Hirst, professor of horticulture, will discuss pruning to maintain proper tree structure and consistent production in dwarf apple trees.

Equipment will be provided or participants may bring their own.
