Trustees ratify AD appointment, contract extension for Painter

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University Trustees on Friday (Aug. 26) ratified the appointment of Michael Bobinski as athletics director and agreed to a contract extension for men’s basketball head coach Matt Painter.

Bobinski’s appointment as vice president and director of Intercollegiate Athletics was announced Aug. 9 by Purdue President Mitch Daniels and Trustees Chair Mike Berghoff, who also chaired the search committee that identified Bobinski as Morgan Burke’s successor.

“I’m excited because we found a director who can help our coaches and staff win division, conference and national championships at the same time we graduate champions in the classroom,” Berghoff said. “These are difficult goals to accomplish simultaneously. But this is Purdue, it is our competitive advantage and something Mike, the coaches and staff are willing to relentlessly pursue.”

Although final contract terms for Bobinski continue to be negotiated, the offer provides for the initial term of his contract to run through July 2021 with base, deferred and incentive clauses based on metrics that will include graduate success rate, cumulative grade point average, placement in the Big Ten, and successes in Big Ten and NCAA tournaments.

The university’s contract with Painter has been extended through the 2021-2022 season.

“I’m really excited about where we are as a program,” Painter said. “Purdue is a special place with special people, and I’m humbled to be a part of it. There is no place I’d rather be, and I am excited to get the 2016-17 season started.”

“We are thrilled that Matt will continue to lead the Purdue basketball team and carry the program into the next era of Purdue Athletics,” Burke said. “He has been at the helm of a very successful run both on the court and in the classroom, and we are excited that he has reaffirmed his commitment to his alma mater. His passion and energy for Purdue University is evident, and we are looking forward to the future of Purdue basketball under his watch.”

In 11 seasons at the Purdue helm, Painter has compiled a 238-134 (.640) record with eight NCAA Tournament appearances, a Big Ten regular-season title and a Big Ten Tournament title. The third all-time winningest coach in Purdue history is one of just six coaches in league history to be named Big Ten Coach of the Year three times, joining Gene Keady, Bobby Knight, Bo Ryan, Tom Izzo and Thad Matta.

Over the last 10 seasons, Purdue’s 229 total wins rank fourth in the Big Ten, while the eight tournament berths are the third most in the Big Ten during that time frame, averaging almost 23 wins a season.

Painter enters the 2016-2017 season third on the school’s all-time wins list (238), behind legendary mentors Keady and Ward “Piggy” Lambert. At age 45, Painter already ranks 18th on the all-time Big Ten wins list.

Last year’s squad posted a 26-9 record, finishing the year with the sixth-most victories in school history. The Boilermakers were among 11 schools nationally to be ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 poll all season.
