WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Summer Undergraduates Research Fellowship program will show off the work of more than 100 students on Aug. 4 at its 2016 Research Symposium.

The annual event will display the summer research of 147 students from engineering, agriculture and science disciplines who are participating in SURF. The interdisciplinary nature of research at Purdue gives undergraduates the opportunity to work with researchers outside their discipline.

The research categories include materials science, energy, sensing technology, earth and space sciences, biotechnology, nanotechnology, health, simulation, infrastructure, natural resources and sustainability.

The symposium will be 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Neil Armstrong Hall of Engineering, with presentations beginning at 9:30 a.m. The event is open to the public.

The students will present their work to professors, graduate students and other program participants.

The SURF program, in its 14th summer, was started in 2003 by Jay P. Gore, Reilly University Chair Professor of Engineering. It provides undergraduate students with an intensive research experience, allowing them to work closely with graduate students and professors and to gain hands-on laboratory experience.

Again this year, research abstracts and other scholarly documents from SURF students will be available at Purdue e-Pubs, as part of the symposium.

Purdue e-Pubs is a free service of the Purdue Libraries and provides global online access to Purdue research. The SURF material will be available at http://docs.lib.purdue.edu/surf.

SURF is administered by the College of Engineering and directed by Melba Crawford, associate dean for research in engineering.
