Appointments, honors and activities

Faculty and staff honors:

- A longtime professor and researcher at Purdue will be honored with the St. John’s University Alumni Achievement Award during a June 25 reunion dinner on the St. John’s University campus.

Frank Dooley, a 1976 graduate of St. John’s University, has worked to become a well-known agricultural professor and researcher at Purdue University since 1998. Currently he serves as vice provost for teaching and learning. In his work to further both student learning and food and agriculture, Dooley has received a number of awards, both at Purdue and nationally.  He also has authored four books and more than 200 articles and other publications in the area of logistical and supply chain management for food and agribusiness.

Alumni honors:

- The Department of Health and Kinesiology has announced five Distinctive Service Awards to honor Purdue faculty, staff and alumni for their influential contributions in fields represented by health and kinesiology. These awards were initiated as part of the department’s 100th anniversary.

The recipients are:

* David H. Craig, a Purdue alumnus, worked as an athletic trainer with the Indiana Pacers for 38 years, including 35 of those years as the head athletic trainer.

* Robert D. Otten, a Purdue alumnus, serves as vice president of health policy at the American Medication Association.

* Ray Anne Shrader, was a Purdue professor from 1959 to 1993. She helped develop the movement and sports science curriculum — the first undergraduate discipline-centered major in the nation.

* Rebecca Spencer, a Purdue alumnus, is an associate professor at the University of Massachusetts Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences. Her current work is broadly focused on the functions of sleep, and she has received over $4 million in funding from the National Institutes of Health.

* Mohammad R. Torabi, a Purdue alumnus, is chancellor's professor and dean of the IU School of Public Health. He also serves as co-director of the rural Center for AIDS/STD Prevention.

Student honors:

- Three students from the Purdue Center for Economics Education will receive recognition for their accomplishments in the field of economic education. The Indiana Council for Economic Education will present the honors on June 28 at its annual awards banquet. The recognition includes a plaque and monetary gift. Receiving the Olin W. Davis Teaching Award is Christy Harshbarger, a multi-grade high-ability teacher at Mayflower Mill Elementary School in Lafayette. She will receive a check for $1,000. The council will present $500 in the runner up category to Kathryn Dodds, a fourth-grade teacher at Happy Hollow Elementary School in West Lafayette; and Tracy Franklin, an economics teacher at Jefferson High School in Lafayette. All three honorees serve on the teacher advisory committee for the Purdue Center for Economics Education in the Krannert School of Management.
