Appointments, honors and activities

Faculty and staff honors:

- Staff members James Schenke and Nina Robinson recently advanced to the Toastmasters International Division G International District 11 Speech contest. Schenke, a video marketing and communications specialist in Marketing and Media, won the Tippecanoe Talkers chapter of Toastmasters International competition with a speech focused on his "father as an everyday hero who embodies the answer to Martin Luther King's question, 'What are you doing for others?' " Robinson, administrative director of Environmental and Ecological Engineering, qualified with her impromptu response to the question asking what would be the unintended negative consequences if she found the cure for all disease. Winners of the District 11 competition advance to the annual World Championship of Public Speaking later this year.

- The College of Agriculture's PK-12 Council selected three winners of the 2016 PK-12 Outreach and Engagement Awards. John Cavaletto received the PK-12 Excellence Staff Award, Rod Williams received the PK-12 Emerging Faculty Impact Award and Tom Turpin received the PK-12 Sustained Faculty Impact Award.  Each recipient received a reward of $5,000 to expand and improve their PK-12 Engagement activities in order to increase impact. Cavaletto, teaching laboratories coordinator in botany and plant pathology, was recognized for his passion and enthusiasm, collaborative thinking, and for taking on outreach and engagement projects outside of his official university appointment on his own initiative. Williams, associate professor and associate head for Extension in forestry and natural resources, was recognized for integrating his Extension and teaching appointment to develop programs to engage PK-12 audiences. Turpin, professor and instruction development specialist in entomology, was recognized for his creative activities that provide students and adults with an opportunity to learn about insects in an engaging and fun manner.

- Industrial designer Tong Jin Kim, associate professor in the Patti & Rusty Rueff School of Visual and Performing Arts, received a platinum award in the Digital and Electronic Device category from the A'Design Award in Italy. Kim received the award for his Digilock Smart Bike Lock. The international design award and competition attracted over 15,000 entries from 83 different countries. Alumni honors:

- Two alumni from Krannert School of Management will be inducted into the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic Hall of Fame: Drew Brees, former Purdue quarterback and the 2009 Super Bowl MVP winner, and former Harvard Business School professor James I. Cash, Jr. The organization will induct five former student-athletes June 13 at its annual ceremony. Created in 1988, the CoSIDA Academic All-America Hall of Fame recognizes Academic All-Americas who received college diplomas at least 10 years ago, have achieved lifetime success in their professional careers and are committed to philanthropic causes.
