'GIRLRISING' film showing at Purdue Jan. 27

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — "Girl Rising," a film about how education can improve girls' lives, will be featured at Purdue University on Wednesday (Jan. 27).

A 52-minute version of this film will be shown at 7:15 p.m., and a panel discussion will follow at 8 p.m. This film will highlight four girls' stories. Also, a reception will be at 6 p.m., and all events are sponsored by Charles Schwab & Co. The event, which will take place in the Krannert Drawing Room & Krannert Auditorium, also is supported by Purdue's Center for Career Opportunities, the Office of the Dean of Students, and University Residences, as well as the office of the Indiana attorney general.

Panelists are:

* Pat Harrington, Tippecanoe County prosecutor.

* Jennifer Thuma, director of victim services with the Indiana attorney general.

* Special Agent Michelle Cunnane of the FBI Office in Indianapolis.

* John Cox, chief of Purdue police.

* Andrea Burniske, Purdue international agricultural extension program coordinator.

* Dana Smith, Purdue student.

Julie Cox, associate dean of students, will moderate the panel.

"Girl Rising" was directed by Academy Award-nominated Richard E. Robbins and features voice contributions from Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Liam Neeson, Cate Blanchett and Selena Gomez. "Girl Rising" has partnered with the 10x10 Foundation to raise awareness that educating and empowering girls can break the cycle of poverty in just one generation.
