Appointments, honors and activities

Faculty and staff honors:

- Marcus Rogers, professor and head of the Department of Computer and Information Technology, has been elected chair of the Digital & Multimedia Sciences Section of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences. AAFS is a multidisciplinary professional organization that provides leadership to advance science and its application to the legal system. Rogers will serve a two-year term. He was elected during the academy's 68th annual scientific meeting last month in Las Vegas.

- David Sanders, associate professor of biological sciences, has been selected as a member of the Science Policy Committee of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, or FASEB. The committee reviews and comments on issues pertaining to federal agency research portfolios and issues pertaining to grants management and administration. FASEB was founded in 1912 and its mission is to advance health and welfare by promoting progress and education in biological and biomedical sciences through service to member societies and collaborative advocacy. Sanders also is a member of the research enterprise evaluation subcommittee, which is charged with guiding FASEB’s response to policies related to the evaluation of research. Student honors:

- Jacqueline Letherman and Haley Arndt, who have served as interns in the Indiana State Senate during the 2016 session, have received Verizon Scholarship awards for 2016. Letherman, of Middlebury, Indiana, is in the College of Liberal Arts studying history. Arndt, of West Lafayette, is in the Krannert School of Management studying marketing. The scholarships are for Indiana residents who are undergraduate or graduate students and have completed an Indiana legislative internship. Students must demonstrate academic achievement, strong work ethic, interpersonal skills, strong attendance and performance record during the internship program.

- The national Society of Physics Students named Purdue's undergraduate Society of Physics Students as a 2015 Distinguished SPS Chapter. The Society of Physics Students, or SPS, is a professional association that was formed in 1968 and operates within the American Institute of Physics. The national physics honor society Sigma Pi Sigma is housed within it. The mission of SPS is to help students transform themselves into contributing member of the professional community. Outstanding, distinguished and notable chapter awards are given based on the chapter's involvement in SPS and other professional meetings, participation in SPS programs, outreach efforts, participation in community service and social events, contribution to student recruitment and retention and interactions with the department's alumni.
