Appointments, honors and activities

Faculty and staff honors:

- Sophie Lelièvre, a professor of basic medical sciences in the College of Veterinary Medicine and associate director of collaborative science for the Purdue Center for Cancer Research, received an Indiana Woman of Achievement Award with Distinction in Breast Cancer Prevention Research from the Ball State University College of Sciences and Humanities. The award is given in recognition of women in Indiana who are "making a difference in improving life by virtue of what they have decided to do with their lives." The award was established by the Task Force on the Status of Women at Ball State in memory of Bernadette Perham, a professor of mathematics who worked to ensure that young women "would enter the opportunity structure of society." Lelièvre was one of five to receive this year's Indiana Women of Achievement awards. She was cited for her breast cancer research using cells grown in three-dimensional cell culture to better mimic tissue within a living system and her research into breast cancer prevention, including establishing the International Breast Cancer and Nutrition Program.  

Alumni honors:

- Two graduates of the School of Civil Engineering were chosen from a field of 250 industry leaders as members of the 2015 class of the National Academy of Construction on Oct. 23 in Charleston, S.C. Christopher Burke (BSCE 1977, MSCE 1979, Ph.D. 1983) is a professor in the Department of Civil and Materials Engineering at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and president of Christopher B. Burke Engineering. Lester M. "Les" Hunkele III (MSCE, 1975) owns Hunkele Consulting based in Mililani, Hawaii.

Student honors:

- Krannert School of Management undergraduate student Rachel Crouch and her team placed third in a smartphone application developer competition on Oct. 18 at the SAP TechEd conference. Crouch's team created the KidEatz application, which helps parents track what their kids eat by using a smartphones camera to scan bar codes. Crouch is an information management student from Fort Wayne, Indiana.
