WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University-based Indiana AgrAbility and DuPont Pioneer have recognized several Indiana community service organizations for their successes in improving the lives of people with physical disabilities and limitations.
The projects were part of the annual Bridging Horizons Community Service Contest, sponsored by both organizations.
The contest allows organizations such as FFA chapters, 4-H clubs, volunteer fire departments, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts the opportunity to help community members overcome physical barriers.
“Projects can be simple or complex, but all of them make a direct impact on the lives of people with physical disabilities,” said Paul Jones, Indiana AgrAbility manager. “We’re encouraged by the quality of the projects.”
The North Miami FFA chapter won first place and $500 for a project in which members raised money to buy a new John Deere Gator utility vehicle and make it wheelchair-accessible for a chapter member with cerebral palsy.
The Carroll Fort Wayne FFA chapter won second place, with a $250 prize, for constructing a wheelchair-accessible chicken coop and kitchen table for a community outreach center.
The Frontier FFA chapter took third place, with a $100 prize, for building two wheelchair ramps for area homes.
The contest had four honorable mentions:
* Girl Scout Troop 60558 raised money to design and build four wheelchair-accessible planter boxes for residents at a heath-care facility.
* The Jay County FFA chapter built a wheelchair ramp at the home of a special needs student.
* The Purdue Collegiate FFA provided a new welcome sign and landscaping at the Indiana Veterans’ Home.
* The Seymour FFA Chapter taught special needs students how to transplant and care for plants to allow them to take home Mother’s Day gifts.
