Extension workshop helps melon growers prepare for harvest

June 18, 2015

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue Extension is hosting a workshop to help Indiana melon producers prepare their packinghouses for a productive 2015 cantaloupe and watermelon harvest.

"Bringing in the Harvest: Preparing for the 2015 Melon Season" will be held from 8 a.m. to noon June 30, at Oaktown Produce Depot, 13990 N. Old Highway 41, Oaktown.

"Indiana cantaloupe and watermelon growers continue to face many challenges as they prepare for the 2015 harvest," said Scott Monroe, Extension educator in Daviess County and workshop organizer. "The need for a safe harvest makes packinghouse preparation a critical item."

Discussion will focus on current produce food safety technology, regulatory developments and preparing packinghouses for harvest.

The Indiana State Department of Health will offer updates on food safety initiatives.

The workshop is free and open to the public. No registration is required.

Participants are required to wear closed-toe shoes and long pants. High heels will not be permitted.

If you need reasonable accommodations to participate in this program, contact Monroe at 765-427-9910 or call 888-EXT-INFO prior to the meeting.
