Appointments, honors and activities

Appointments and promotions:

- Krista Ratcliffe, professor of English at Marquette University, has been named professor and head of Purdue's Department of English. The appointment is effective Aug. 1. Ratcliffe's research in rhetoric and composition studies has focused on intersections of rhetoric, gender, feminism and race, and her book "Rhetorical Listening" has won three national awards in her discipline. She served as president of the Rhetoric Society of America in 2012-13 and president of the Coalition of Women Scholars in the History of Rhetoric and Composition 2000-02. Ratcliffe received her bachelor's master's degrees and in English from Ball State University and her doctorate from Ohio State University. She succeeds Nancy Peterson, who is returning to the faculty after serving first as interim head beginning in 2009 and then an additional five years as department head.

Faculty and staff honors:

- Loring (Larry) Nies, professor of civil engineering and environmental and ecological engineering, will receive the 2015 Excellence in Environmental Engineering Education Award. The award is presented by the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists and the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors for significantly contributing to the profession in the area of educating practioners. Nies, who has been at Purdue since 1993, was inducted into the Book of Great Teachers in 2013. The Excellence in Environmental Engineering Education Award will be presented later this month at a conference in Washington, D.C.

- Raymond Florax, a researcher and teacher of regional and urban economics in Purdue University's Department of Agricultural Economics, has been elected a fellow of the Regional Science Association International in recognition of his lifetime contributions to the scholarship of regional science. He is one of three scholars from around the world selected for the honor this year.  In addition to urban and regional economics, Florax's research and teaching has included the econometrics of spatial data analysis. Florax ranks among the top 5 percent of authors in economics on Research Papers in Economics
