January 29, 2015

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Girls and young women in grades 8-12 who want to learn more about career opportunities in agriculture are invited to attend an information and networking event sponsored by Purdue Extension.

The “Young Ladies of Agriculture” forum will be held Feb. 18 as part of the Midwest Women in Agriculture Conference. The conference will take place Feb. 18-19 at the Radisson Hotel at Star Plaza, 800 E. 81st St. in Merrillville.

“Our goal is to inspire and educate girls and young women who have an interest in farming or agribusiness,” said Kelly Heckaman, Extension educator in Kosciusko County and one of the forum organizers. “This event offers an exciting opportunity for participants to interact with professional women who are leaders in the agriculture industry, as well as to share experiences with one another.”

Speakers are Angie Abbott, program leader and assistant director of Purdue’s Health and Human Sciences Extension, and Lindsey O’Hara, northern region vice president of the FFA.

Topics include the role of women in farming, working on a family farm and career paths for women in agriculture.

The forum begins at 3 p.m. CST. Cost is $10, which includes dinner and admission for the participant and one adult guest. Registration deadline is Feb. 6. To sign up, visit the forum website at https://purdue.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_aXYEQ1Kv7hoscXb.

Co-sponsors are the Indiana Corn Marketing Council and the Indiana Soybean Alliance.
