Purdue 'Faculty Lunch and Learns' aim to raise awareness about substance abuse, mental health issues

February 5, 2015

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University's Campus Improvement Team will host a series of "Faculty Lunch and Learns" to raise awareness about substance abuse and mental health issues.

"These sessions are designed to allow faculty to learn about campus resources, services, initiatives and how to incorporate the information into their teaching and interactions with students," said Tammy Loew, health advocacy coordinator and interim director of the Student Wellness Office. "This will assist faculty members in understanding the campus environment and how they can respond to a student in distress."

All sessions will be 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Stewart Center, Room 318. The dates and session topics are:

* Feb. 18. "The Mental Health Landscape with College Students: Current Challenges and Opportunities." Speaker is Susan Prieto-Welch, director of Counseling and Psychological Services.

* March 4. "The Role of the Behavioral Intervention Team on Campus." Speakers are L. Tony Hawkins, temporary associate vice president for student affairs and dean of students, and Julie Cox, associate dean of students, Student Assistance Center.

* March 25. "Addressing Conduct Issues with Students." Speaker is Jeffery Stefancic, associate dean of students, Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities.

* April 8. "Responding to Substance Abuse and Mental Health Issues." Speaker is John Cox, Purdue police chief.

* April 22. "Student Panel." Speakers to be announced.
