WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - A Purdue University expert in hardwood lumber products will give a workshop Nov. 13 on Indiana's industry and the proper ways to handle, use and market lumber.

The Purdue University Department of Forestry and Natural Resources is sponsoring "Hardwood Lumber: Producing, Using and Selling" workshop at Morgan Monroe State Forest Training Center, 6220 Forest Road, Martinsville, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Dan Cassens, professor of wood products and author of Manufacturing and Marketing Eastern Hardwood Lumber Produced by Thin Kerf Band Mills, will lead the workshop.

"Just about anyone can take a log and make it into lumber and then use that lumber for a particular project," Cassens said. "But to maximize the aesthetic and economic value of that log, a basic understanding of lumber processing and the structure of the wood manufacturing industry is needed. This workshop will provide that understanding and also allow registrants to exchange information about their own experiences."

Cassens owns a mill that he uses to process and market mostly salvage trees from his woodlots.

The workshop will benefit thin kerf portable band mill operators and traditional mill operators, landowners, foresters, secondary wood product manufacturers, weekend wood workers and anyone wanting a better understanding of wood and lumber.

Topics include wood quality and characteristics, log scaling, hardwood lumber grading and pricing, sawing patterns and grade sawing, determining veneer quality logs, wood moisture and drying, stain and insects, and selling and marketing wood products for small and traditional producers. There will also be a sawing demonstration.

The Division of Forestry of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources is co-sponsoring the program in cooperation with several industry groups.

There is no fee to register, but participants must register in advance by contacting Dan Cassens at dcassens@purdue.edu or by calling 765-412-6844. The complete program and registration form is available at http://bit.ly/1FD3I7m. Those who plan to attend must bring a bag lunch.
