WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Andrew Yang, an author and leader of Venture America, a fellowship program that places top college graduates in startup companies for two years in low-cost U.S. cities in order to generate job growth and train young entrepreneurs, will speak at Purdue University on Monday (Oct. 20).

Yang’s appearance on campus, which is free and open to the public, is part of the Purdue Libraries’ Distinguished Lecture Series. His lecture is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Stewart Center’s Fowler Hall.

Yang, founder and CEO of Venture America, has appeared on CNBC, MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” and Fox News, and in Time Magazine, the Wall Street Journal and Techcrunch. He has been named a “Champion of Change” by the White House for his work with the company, as well as one of Fast Company’s 100 Most Creative People in Business.

During the lecture, Yang will discuss his book, “Smart People Should Build Things,” published by Harper Business earlier this year. He will touch on the current landscape and where college graduates tend to end up, both geographically and by sector. According to the Harper website detailing the book, “In Smart People Should Build Things, this self-described ‘recovering lawyer’ and entrepreneur weaves together a compelling narrative of success stories (including his own), offering observations about the flow of talent in the United States and explanations of why current trends are leading to economic distress and cultural decline. He also presents recommendations for both policymakers and job seekers to make entrepreneurship more realistic and achievable.”

University Bookstore will host a book sale of “Smart People Should Build Things” at Fowler Hall immediately after the lecture, and Yang will sign copies of the book.

The lecture is made possible by funding to Purdue Libraries from the estate of Anna M. Akerley and is co-sponsored with the Discovery Lecture Series.
