3 Purdue professors elected as fellows of American Physical Society
December 11, 2014
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Three Purdue University professors have been awarded the distinction of fellow from the American Physical Society.
Ahmed Hassanein, Ernesto E. Marinero and Kevin Webb have received the distinction, which recognizes outstanding contribution to physics.
Hassanein, department head and the Paul L. Wattelet Professor of Nuclear Engineering, is being honored "for pioneering contribution to comprehensive models, simulation, and innovative experiments for verification of plasma evolution and interactions with materials for applications in fusion devices, laser and discharge-produced plasma and nanolithography."
Marinero, a professor of engineering practice in the School of Materials Engineering, is being honored "for his seminal contributions to the development of materials for recording and sensor devices enabling continuous density increases of information storage technology, in particular of magnetic recording."
Webb, a professor of electrical and computer engineering, is being honored "for seminal contributions to the description of waves in complex media, including optical forces and energy in dispersive systems, nanophotonics, metamaterial properties, and the characterization of random scattering media."
The full list of 2014 fellows will be published in the March 2015 issue of APS News.
The society's Division of Plasma Physics nominated Hassanein, its Forum on Industrial and Applied Physics nominated Marinero and its Division of Laser Science nominated Webb. The Council of the American Physical Society elected them to fellowship.
Fellowship is limited to one half of one percent of the membership, according to the society.
The American Physical Society was founded in 1899 and its mission is to advance and diffuse the knowledge of physics. The society has more than 50,000 members, including physicists in academia, national laboratories and industry in the United States and throughout the world.
