Field day to cover five essential topics for crop producers

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University's Department of Agronomy will co-host a field day with Area Nine Extension agriculture and natural resources educators on Sept. 5.

The workshop will run from 7:30 a.m. to noon at the Purdue Agronomy Center for Research and Education, seven miles northwest of campus at 4540 U.S. 52. Several Purdue agronomy experts will speak on five major discussion areas in agronomy along with three deans from the College of Agriculture.

Jay Akridge, Glenn W. Sample Dean of Agriculture, will start the event by speaking about the 100th anniversary of the Smith-Lever Act, which created the national Extension system.

Jason Henderson, associate dean and director of Purdue Extension, will follow with a presentation on the current status of Extension. Karen Plaut, senior associate dean for research and faculty affairs, will speak about Purdue's plant science initiative, which began last year.

Other speakers and topics:

* Soybeans: Shaun Casteel, Extension soybean specialist.

* Soil health/fertility and cover crops focusing on corn: Eileen Kladivko, Extension soil specialist, and Jim Camberato and Brad Joern, Extension soil fertility specialists.

* Weed management: Bill Johnson, Extension weed scientist.

* Fungicides: Kiersten Wise, Extension crop disease specialist.

The field day will count for Pesticide Applicator Recertification Program credit and continuing education units for certified crop advisers. Continuing certification hours for Indiana commercial pesticide applicators have been applied for in categories 1, 11, 14 and RT.
