Winter weather advisory issued for area

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory until 7 p.m. Monday (Feb. 17) for areas of central Indiana, including Tippecanoe County.

The forecast calls for 2-4 inches of snow and sleet with the additional possibility of light ice accumulation. Precipitation, which is expected to end during the early evening, will likely impact those commuting in the afternoon and evening.

University public safety officials urge those traveling to or from campus to be cautious on the roadways. Travel tips from the Indiana State Police include:

* Check the forecast

* Notify family and friends of your travel route

* Allow extra time to get to your destination

* Clear your vehicle of snow and ice before leaving

* Keep your gas tank full, if possible

* Keep your cell phone charged

* Have an emergency kit
