Purdue places Sigma Nu fraternity on probation

January 10, 2013

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University officials announced Friday (Jan. 10) that Sigma Nu fraternity has been placed on probation for the spring semester.

The probation, in effect through May 12, stems from a function at the house in late September during which alcohol was made available to minors.

During the function, some individuals tried to prevent Purdue EMTs and police from entering the house to check on a person's well-being after a 911 call was made. So, in addition to participating in alcohol education programs, the fraternity must write letters of apology to the Purdue medics and police and take part in "Adopt-a-Cop" to further develop relations with emergency services, said Jeffery Stefancic, associate dean of students. The chapter also is restricted from sponsoring or co-sponsoring any programs at which alcohol is served.

"The national Sigma Nu office and alumni were very helpful and put several corrective measures in place immediately after the incident," Stefancic said.
