December 17, 2013

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Farmers and others in agribusiness will get a better handle on the financial outlook for 2014 by participating in a webinar Thursday (Dec. 19) led by experts in Purdue University's Department of Agricultural Economics and Center for Commercial Agriculture.

Those giving presentations in "Managing Your Agricultural Business in 2014" beginning at 2 p.m. EST will provide their outlook on crops and livestock, including expected returns for corn and soybeans and the resulting implications for cash rental rates and farmland values. They also will discuss key strategies farm and agribusiness managers should focus on next year.

"This webinar will provide insight into the commodity outlook for 2014 and beyond and discuss the implications for farmers, agricultural lenders, and agribusiness personnel," said Jim Mintert professor of agricultural economics and assistant director of Purdue Extension for agriculture and natural resources. "U.S. agriculture is in a transition period, and this webinar will help attendees position their business for the upcoming changes."

Mintert will be among the four presenters. His research and Extension programming focuses primarily on livestock economics and commodity risk management.

The other presenters:

* Mike Boehlje, distinguished professor of agricultural economics and with the Center for Food and Agricultural Business. He has devoted his career to helping farm and agribusiness managers and policymakers understand the pragmatic economic and financial consequences of their decisions.

* Chris Hurt, professor of agricultural economics and Purdue Extension agricultural economist. His areas of specialty include examination of family farm market problems, pricing strategies and livestock futures market performance.

* Michael Langemeier, associate director of the Center for Commercial Agriculture. His Extension and research interests include cropping systems, benchmarking, strategic management, cost of production, and technical and economic efficiency.

The webinar is free, but those wanting to participate should register in advance at htttp://www.agecon.purdue.edu/commercialag/registration/webinar_registration.asp.
