Purdue Extension to offer sheep, goat educational webinars

November 6, 2013

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue Extension in cooperation with the University of Kentucky and Kentucky State University will offer two goat and sheep webinars in December to help producers with feeding practices, forage management and animal health.

The webinars will run 7-9 p.m. (EST) on Dec. 3 and 10 at select Purdue and University of Kentucky Extension county offices.

Expert presenters will discuss animal health, including selecting goats and sheep for resistance to internal parasites. They also will focus on plant and hay species best suited for the small ruminants since they rely on forage-heavy diets.

"The webinar format allows the organizers from the two states to cooperate on this program and bring nationally known, expert speakers to producers," said Mike Neary, Purdue Extension small ruminant specialist. "Producers in Indiana and Kentucky will have access to cutting edge information that should help them produce sheep and goats more efficiently."

Topics and speakers:

* Dec. 3: "What kind of hay for goats and sheep?" by Terry Hutchens, retired University of Kentucky goat specialist.

* Dec. 3: "Best pasture plant species for goats and sheep" by Greg Brann, grazing lands and soil health specialist with the Tennessee Natural Resources Conservation Service.

* Dec. 10: "Keeping sheep and goats healthy" by Patty Scharko, Clemson University veterinarian.

* Dec. 10: "Selecting sheep and goats for resistance to internal parasites" by David Notter, professor emeritus of animal sciences at Virginia Tech.

Purdue Extension county offices signed up to host the webinars are Dearborn, DuBois, Fulton, Hancock, Hendricks, Howard, Huntington, Jefferson, La Porte, Lawrence, Miami, Morgan, Ohio, Owen, Perry, Vermillion, Warrick, Washington and Whitley.

University of Kentucky county offices hosting the webinars are Breathitt, Carter, Clay, Franklin, Grant, Johnson, Lewis, Lyon, Ohio and Scott.
