Parking, lane restrictions set during Christmas Show matinee Friday

December 3, 2013

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Traffic in a two-block section of University Street near Purdue's campus will be restricted to one lane during the late morning and early afternoon hours of Friday (Dec. 6) in order to accommodate school buses for the annual Purdue Christmas Show matinee.

Around 2,000 children from area schools will be on campus for the 11:15 a.m. matinee, said Purdue police Sgt. Keene Red Elk. About 88 buses will be on campus, and a C section of the Discovery Park lot also will be affected.

The section of University Street between 3rd and 5th streets includes street parking. However, university officials will post notices on Wednesday that the spaces must be open on Friday. The spaces, along with the street lane next to them, will be used for bus parking. Cars that are parked in the designated area must be moved by 9 a.m. on Friday.

Signs will show the lane restrictions, and police officers will be positioned at 3rd and 4th streets where they intersect with University Street to help ensure safe and adequate traffic flow. The parking spaces and roadway are expected to reopen shortly before 1 p.m.

At the Discovery Park lot, a parking section south of the bus stop will be reserved for bus parking effective from 9 a.m. to around 1 p.m. Friday. Staff and students who normally use the southern half of the C lot are encouraged to make other arrangements in advance.
