Appointments, honors and activities
• Faculty and staff honors:
- Laura Bofferding, an assistant professor of mathematics education in the College of Education, has been named a 2013-14 National Academy of Education/Spencer Postdoctoral Fellow. Twenty fellows were selected from more than 220 applicants. The fellowships are administered by the National Academy of Education, an honorary educational society, and are funded by a grant from the Spencer Foundation. The fellows will receive $55,000 for a period of up to two years. Bofferding will investigate the conceptual basis for the early introduction of negative numbers. She has been at Purdue since 2011, when she earned her doctorate in curriculum studies and teacher education from Stanford University. Her primary research area is elementary school students' learning of integer concepts and integer learning trajectories. Most recently, Bofferding received a grant from the Purdue Research Foundation to examine the processes and knowledge involved in pre-service teachers' solutions to integer problems.
- Steven Collicott, professor of aeronautics and astronautics, has been named the new chair of the Suborbital Applications Researchers Group of the Commercial Spaceflight Federation (CSF). The CSF is made up of several companies including commercial spaceflight developers, operators, spaceports, suppliers and service providers, working to promote the development of commercial human spaceflight, pursue higher levels of safety and share best practices and expertise throughout the industry.- Rey Junco, an associate professor of library science, has been named a returning fellow to the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University. According to a news release issued by the center, fellows will work primarily in Cambridge, Mass., alongside Berkman directors and staff, and will serve as key instigators within the vibrant research community. Junco is a social media scholar who investigates the impact of social technologies on college students.
