Imaging tech firm launches mini spectrometer, will present at 2013 SPIE Defense, Security and Sensing

April 26, 2013

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind., LOGAN, Utah, and DURHAM, N.C. - Professionals who analyze chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing substances, hazardous materials, explosives, pollutants and raw materials may benefit by using a newly launched hand-held spectrometer from an imaging technology company.

Wasatch Photonics Inc. has launched its Stroker 785L Raman spectrometer for rent through http://www.ramanrentals.com or purchase. The company has offices in Utah, the Research Triangle Park in North Carolina and the Purdue Research Park.

Michael Sullivan, general manager of the spectrometer division at Wasatch Photonics, said the device makes use of new high-dispersion grating technology.

"This provides improved efficiency over an entire bandwidth, which increases the transmission of the whole optics," he said. "The result is a miniature, portable and fast f/1.3 Raman spectrometer with performance equal to that of large research-grade spectrometers."

Sullivan said the Stroker 785L was developed to expand the use of Raman spectroscopy in several applications.

"It can complete on-site analysis of hazardous materials, biological and chemical warfare agents, explosives, pollutants, raw materials used in chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing, and other substances faster than technology currently available," he said. "This technology could replace existing spectrometers for fluorescence, optical coherence tomography, laser characterization and astronomy."

Sullivan also announced that a Wasatch Photonics official will speak Tuesday (April 30) at the 2013 SPIE Defense, Security and Sensing conference in Baltimore.

Scott M. Norton, vice president of engineering, will speak during an 8 a.m. "LIBS, Raman and Terahertz" session of the Next-Generation Spectroscopic Technologies track at the conference. His presentation is titled "High-throughput Spectrometer Designs in a Compact Form-Factor: Principles and Applications."

"It will be of interest to those concerned with sensitivity and portability in their applications," Norton said.
