Expert on movie ratings, frightening images for children

April 18, 2013

Glenn Sparks, professor of communication

Sparks is a mass media expert who studies the effects of frightening images on children. He can talk about how the newly announced movie rating initiative, Check the Box, can help parents better understand movie content, as well as what parents need to be aware of regarding exposing young children to scary images in movies. For example, he says it is a common trap that when children understand the difference between real and not real, adults assume they are ready for more mature content.
