Purdue Theatre to present 'Medea'
February 8, 2013
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue Theatre will present "Medea," by Euripides, and translated by Ian Johnston, beginning Feb. 15 at the Nancy T. Hansen Theatre in Yue-Kong Pao Hall of Visual and Performing Arts.
"Forget what you thought about Greek tragedy! This is an exciting version of 'Medea,' the great revenge classic by Euripides." said Joel Ebarb, chair of the theatre department. "This innovative interpretation is the collaborative creation of third-year MFA students Michael Lenz, the director, and Ian Sturges Milliken, who has composed original music and will be performing as chorus leader for the women's and musician's chorus. This 'Medea' is guaranteed to challenge all of your preconceptions about Greek drama.
Lenz said, "In an all-consuming act of revenge, the character of Medea comes to life as a fierce storm of vengeance consuming everything in her path. Our interpretation of this classic tale introduces a chorus with a new and dynamic musical voice, composed and led by Milliken, which will evoke a strong emotional connection for the audience."
Performances are 7:30 p.m. Feb. 15, 16, 20, 21, 22 and 23. Matinees also will be offered at 2:30 p.m. on Feb. 17, 23 and 24. Tickets are $19.50 for the general public, $12.50 for students and $15.50 for seniors ages 62 and older.
A special preview performance of "Medea" will be offered at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 14, with all seats $6.50 general admission. Tickets for "Medea" are available at the Pao Hall, Elliott Hall and Stewart Center box offices or by calling 765-494-3933 or 800-914-SHOW.
The Nancy T. Hansen Theatre is located in Yue-Kong Pao Hall of Visual and Performing Arts at 552 W. Wood St.
