Kanter Lecture to discuss abusive supervision in the workplace

Purdue will host Stephen Courtright, associate professor and Presidential Impact Fellow in the Department of Management at Texas A&M University, on April 27 to talk about abusive supervision in the workplace.

Courtright’s talk, titled “My Family Made Me Do It: Family-Work Conflict and Abusive Supervision,” is part of the Kanter Lecture Series and will begin at 10 a.m. in the Krannert Center, Room 124. It is free and open to the public. In an effort to understand how to decrease workplace abuse, the talk will answer the question of why supervisors behave abusively toward subordinates.

The Kanter Lecture Series works to facilitate communication between Purdue faculty, students and work-family researchers by inviting recipients of the annual Rosabeth Moss Kanter Award to speak on campus. The Kanter Award is presented by Purdue University’s Center for Families to authors who publish the best work-family research article during a calendar year. Courtright was selected to receive the award in 2017 for his research article, “My Family Made Me Do It: A Cross-Domain, Self-Regulatory Perspective on Antecedent to Abusive Supervision.”

Courtright’s research focuses on bad bosses and dysfunctional teams, and how organizations can prevent both. His work has been published in leading scholarly journals and has been featured by the Wall Street Journal, Forbes, National Public Radio and more. He currently serves on multiple editorial boards and is the recipient of several research awards.

The lecture series is sponsored by the Center for Families, Susan Bulkeley Butler Center for Leadership Excellence, Krannert School of Management, the Department of Sociology, the Department of Psychological Sciences and the Department of Human Development and Family Studies.
