YWCA honors two Purdue women at annual Salute to Women event

The YWCA Greater Lafayette honored two Purdue-affiliated women at its 44th annual Salute to Women banquet on Tuesday (March 6). Carolyn T. Jones, associate provost emerita, was one of three women who were recognized as a Dr. Mary Keller Ade Woman of Wisdom. Veronica Jalomo, Nutrition Education Program community wellness coordinator, was honored as a Woman of Distinction.

The annual banquet works to recognize women who have made outstanding achievements in volunteer or professional roles and have demonstrated role-modeling qualities and leadership in their community. Eight other women from the Lafayette area were also honored.

Jones started her 44-year professional career as a middle school teacher and ended it serving as associate executive vice president for academic affairs emerita at Purdue. During her journey, she served as Purdue’s first Title IX coordinator and first female assistant vice president. She also became Albion College’s youngest dean of women at age 28. Jones opened up many opportunities for students on campus through leading the University’s campus-wide reaccreditation efforts and co-founding and mentoring faculty through the Academic Leadership Program. She is a community advocate and leader and has served on multiple boards and committees.

Jalomo advocates for effective policy, systems and environmental strategies to improve health in the broader community through her position as the Nutrition Education Program community wellness coordinator for Purdue. Throughout her career, she has served the Latino community of Indiana and worked to reduce health disparities to achieve health equity among minorities. In 2013, she helped to obtain the grant from the Indiana Department of Education to implement the first Migrant Education Program in Tippecanoe County for children.

The first Salute to Women banquet took place on March 15, 1974. It was organized and sponsored by the Lafayette Women’s Political Caucus. In 2000, the YWCA became the sole sponsoring organization.
