2 more NewU webinars to run Oct. 31 and Nov. 7

The fourth and fifth in a series of one-hour Purdue NewU webinars will be held Oct. 31 and Nov. 7.

The Oct. 31 webinar, being held from 11 a.m. to noon, will focus on "Competency-Based Education." The Purdue presenter will be Jeff Evans, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering technology. Representing Kaplan University will be Thomas Boyd, dean, School of Business and Information Technology; Beth Gillon, ExcelTrack director; and Emily Thompson, a faculty member in the School of General Education.

The Nov. 7 webinar, set for 1:30-2:30 p.m., will cover "Continuous Improvement in Teaching and Learning." The Purdue presenter will be Jon Harbor, director of digital education and associate vice provost. Representing Kaplan University will be Matt Braslow, director of assessment and research, and Stephanie Thompson, a faculty member in the School of General Education.

The webinars are intended to bring together faculty and staff from Purdue and Kaplan University to foster learning, share best practices, promote ongoing collaboration, and support better understanding among the teams and campuses. 

Each webinar is limited to the first 1,000 participants, and videos of each will be archived on the NewU website at http://purduenewu.org. The website also provides an archive for previous webinars that looked at mission, online learning and curriculum design.

Instructions for attendees

Using the WebEx meeting tool, Purdue and Kaplan presenters will address their topic. The remaining time will be devoted to addressing questions submitted by the audience, which will include faculty and staff from both institutions.

You may join the webinars 30 minutes before their start times. If you have not used WebEx before, please use this time to for some necessary initial setup.

To join, and go to the NewU website: http://purduenewu.org.

Click on Faculty and Staff Webinars.

Select the link for the day's webinar topic.

Enter your name, email and the event password, which is boilers1.

Click on "Join Now."

If you have not used WebEx before, you will be promoted to download and install the Cisco WebEx add-on. After installing, quit your browser, relaunch the browser and rejoin the event.

Once in the event, click on "Quick Start" in the top left corner. Then select how you want to hear your audio -- through the computer or call in on the phone -- and then click OK. (With either option you will be able to view the presentation as well as hear the audio.)

If you select to hear it on your computer, a box labeled "Computer Audio Settings" will appear where you can make adjustments. You are now ready to see and hear the webinar.

Attendees will submit questions through the Q&A icon. A selection of these will be addressed during the last 20 minutes of the webinar.
