Smoking area changes to be in effect for start of fall semester

Two smoking areas on Purdue’s West Lafayette campus will be eliminated, one area added and another relocated for the start of the fall semester.

The adjustment in smoking areas to locations with less pedestrian traffic was discussed by the University Senate in February as the University takes steps toward an eventual smoke-free campus. All changes will be in effect as of Aug. 18.

Smoking areas to be eliminated are one between Matthews and Stone halls, and one outside the Hicks Undergraduate Library south of Stewart Center. The new area is on the south side of State Street in front of the Agriculture Administration Building. The smoking area at the northeast side of the Purdue Armory is relocated to the northwest corner of the Armory along University Street.

Notices have been placed at the old smoking areas, along with maps showing other nearby designated smoking locations. Those who need to cross State Street to reach the new area by AGAD can use the crosswalks at University Street and at Marsteller Street.

The updated map also is available at Purdue’s smoke-free campus website: http://www.purdue.edu/smokefree/.
