Don't Miss It!

The rhythms of summer arise from its outdoor themes and events but also from its sense of reach toward new experience. The woodblock prints in Purdue Galleries' "Bijin, Kabuki, and Sumo" carry the viewer to 19th century Japan. Art can be a travel adventure. Don't Miss It!

In this special installment, Don't Miss It! provides a sample of events to attend or participate in this summer in Tippecanoe County. Another good calendar, including many of the events below plus more things at Prophetstown State Park and other sites, is here.

Weekly, biweekly and ongoing

Farmers markets. Three of them each week May-October. Really. Get fine fresh produce, baked goods and other stuff; run into people you know and make new friends. Purdue Farmers Market at 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursdays (and until 3 p.m. in August-October); Historic Lafayette Farmers Market at 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturdays through October; and Sagamore West Farmers Market at 3:30-7 p.m. Wednesdays through October. Lafayette Citizens Band. Concert band music directed by William D. Kisinger. Traditional, rousing and fun to hear. 7:30 p.m. Riehle Plaza, Second and Main streets, Lafayette. Thursdays through Aug. 3. Also: On July 4, the Stars and Stripes Concert; this band will play 8-10 p.m. The band also will have a Labor Day Concert at 7 p.m. Sept. 4. Details

Taste of Tippecanoe Taste of Tippecanoe

Exhibition. "50/300: Art Inspired by the Feast of the Hunters' Moon." May 9-June 16. Purdue University Galleries. Featuring historical artifacts, Feast memorabilia, and a juried exhibition of original artwork, this exhibition celebrates the 50th annual Feast of the Hunters' Moon and 300th anniversary of the founding of Fort Ouiatenon. Fountain Gallery, 330 Main St., Lafayette. PMU Summer Concert Series. Purdue Memorial Union and PSUB have the recipe: good food, good live music, good folks. Stir and enjoy. The series runs on Fridays, July 7, 14, 21 and 28. Food service and music at 6-7:30 p.m. on the Union front lawn (if weather is inclement, check Facebook page). $ for food. Art in the Park. Delightful Tuesdays and a Sunday from Lafayette Parks and Recreation, featuring local art and music, food, and family fun. Details on Facebook

JUNE 23-25

Indiana Fiddlers' Gathering. This celebration of many kinds of traditional music is so good your toes will tap themselves. With featured concerts, education and more. $. Details

JULY 4

Stars and Stripes Celebration. Music and fireworks. Purdue Summer Jazz Band at 7-8 p.m. Lafayette Citizens Band at 8-10 p.m. Fireworks shortly thereafter. Riehle Plaza, Second and Main streets, Lafayette. Details

JULY 8

Wabash Riverfest. Think outside the bridge. Enjoy a day of varied activities for all ages -- a 5K, canoe race challenges, conservation information, live music, kids' fishing derby, zoo friends, pony rides and a bounce house for the littler ones, lots more; food available. JULY 8

Mosey Down Main Street. A monthly street celebration May-September featuring artists and musicians on three stages. Also street performers and sales of food, beer, wine, crafts. Main Street in Lafayette from Sixth to 11th. Also Aug. 12 and Sept. 2. Details

JULY 18

Purdue Summer Band Concert. Picture an idyllic summer evening with band music, folks sitting on blankets or lawn chairs (bring yours), and kids making use of their rolling-down-the-hill clothes. 7:30-9:30 p.m. Slayter Center. Free. Details

JULY 21

Gallery Walk. Some satisfying, sophisticated time from head to foot in downtown Lafayette. Some like to dine out first, then stroll at their own pace to view artworks at 30 stops, hear live music and sample complimentary refreshments. Also free rides in horse-drawn carriage. Presented by Tippecanoe Arts Federation. 6-9 p.m. Also Sept. 15. Details

JULY 22-29

Tippecanoe County 4-H Fair (87th annual). You got your animals, you got your exhibits, you got your kids, you got your rides, you got your elephant ears. Hey, this is as American as apple pie. Tippecanoe County Fairgrounds, 1010 Teal Road, Lafayette.

JULY 20

Purdue Summer Band joins weekly Lafayette Citizens Band concert. Purdue band at 6:30 p.m.; Citizens Bands at 7:30-9:30 p.m. Riehle Plaza, Second and Main streets, Lafayette. Free. Details

JULY 27

Cultural Festival. Food, crafts, music, more. 4-7 p.m. PMU, front lawn. Rain location: PMU, South Ballroom.

AUG. 4-9

Colt World Series. Some of the best age 15-16 baseball teams in the world will converge on Loeb Stadium along Main Street in Columbian Park. A tournament and a longstanding community event. $. Details to be posted as tournament nears and teams qualify.
