Title IX mandatory reporters must complete annual training requirement

The Office of the Vice President for Ethics and Compliance is reminding individuals who have been designated as Title IX mandatory reporters that they must complete annual training through WebCert.

What is Title IX?

Title IX is a federal law under the Education Amendments of 1972 that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in education programs or activities operated by recipients of federal financial assistance. Purdue is subject to Title IX, and as a result, the University is required to provide annual training to those whom the federal government considers “responsible employees.”

What does this mean for faculty and staff?

Not all employees are designated as Title IX mandatory reporters. Individuals who are designated as Title IX Mandatory Reporters will receive notification. Those who are not designated as a mandatory reporter do not need to complete the certification.

Faculty and staff who began at the University after Sept. 1, 2016, who have been designated as a Title IX mandatory reporter will receive a notification in the coming weeks with instructions regarding how to complete the certification.

Faculty and staff previously notified and designated as mandatory title reporters should note that this is an annual requirement. The date an individual last completed the training is displayed in WebCert. If an individual completed it within the last 12 months, they do not need to complete the training at this time. They will receive a reminder through WebCert as the expiration date draws near. Many will have received reminders during January.

Who is considered a mandatory reporter?

All "responsible employees" are mandatory reporters under Title IX. The University designates mandatory reporters based on the position that they occupy.

Mandatory reporters include, but are not limited to:

* Vice presidents, vice chancellors, vice provosts, deans, department heads, directors, all faculty members, and coaches.

* Employees in supervisory or management roles.

* Academic advisors and student affairs professionals.

* Residential life staff and resident assistants.

Questions or concerns regarding the training requirements should be directed to vpeceducation@purdue.edu.
